We’re looking to add more Keelboat instructors, School SUP/kayak instructors and Race Coaches to our team.
Keelboat instructors
Keelboat instructors take adults and children sailing on board our 8.2m Muir training yachts. As a minimum they teach introductory keelboat courses, deliver safe boating courses to school students and take casual harbour sails, with opportunities to teach racing, cruising and other advanced courses for suitably experienced instructors. Candidates may also be offered work as a School SUP/Kayak Instructor.
To be considered for this role, you need to:
- Have extensive sailing experience
- Have a ‘skipper restricted limits’ certificate or undertake training to commercially operate our vessels under an exemption to the maritime rules. We will cover the training cost for candidates we deem likely to be suitable.
- Have, or be willing to get, instructing experience on keelboats. Wellington Ocean Sports can provide unpaid opportunities to gain instructing experience to candidates who are otherwise suitably experienced
- First aid certificate
- Have good people skills, including with children
- Be physically fit
The work intensity is seasonal with more work available in summer. Work is offered on a casual basis. We seek people who are generally available as a minimum 1 day per weekend. Week day and weeknight availability is helpful, but not essential.
School SUP/Kayak instructors
School SUP/kayak instructors take school students as part of our schools program. Groups of up to 14 are taken by two instructors on a 1.5 hr session. The session begins with a discussion about safe boating and is followed by students participating in kayaking and/or SUP (depending on conditions)
To be considered for this role, you need to:
- Have experience working with children
- Have kayaking and SUP experience
- First aid certificate
- Be adaptable – our programs run in most conditions
The work is weekdays generally 9.30am-2.30pm when we have bookings in Term 4 and Term 1 of school. This summer we expect to have around 50 days of school bookings during Term 4 and 1. We seek people who would be available for most of these days.
Suitable candidates may also be offered an opportunity to train as a keelboat instructor.
Race Coaches
Race coaches teach our advanced racing courses, lead new member coaching sessions, and may be given opportunities to lead match racing coaching for the Wellington Youth Sailing Trust on their E6 fleet..
To be considered for this role, you need to:
- Have extensive racing and/or match racing experience on relevant boats
- Be organised and self driven
- Be able to present information in a way that is easily understood
- Have experience coaching racing
Having a ‘skipper restricted limits’ certificate or being willing to undertake training to commercially operate our vessels under an exemption to the maritime rules would be helpful but not essential.
Member coaching will likely be some weeknights during summer with the possibility of on board coaching during races. E6 coaching will involve weekend and evening work, with occasional mid week work available.
