Wellington Ocean Sports were invited by the Halberg adaptive water sports programme and their partners Flight Centre Foundation to run an adaptive water sports day, on Sunday 5th March involving SUP and Waka Ama.
The event was for those with physical disabilities in the Wellington region to be able to try out these great sports and to see that they can do it and know the options for them to continue afterwards.
The SUP instruction involved using inflatable 7ft boards along with a couple of adaptive seats, plus outriggers to attach to the boards for those who cannot or may struggle to stand and balance.
The activities took place in the Lagoon in front of the Wharewaka Function Centre as the weather was a bit breezy to launch off Freyberg beach. After organising all the life jackets, boards, kayaks and BBQ we set about having a great inclusive morning helping children with their families enjoy the water.
Our instructors James Allen and Sam Price had training with the chair and boards, the large inflatable board that can carry a party and manned the BBQ. It was a successful and fun morning.
The Halberg Trust has now donate the equipment and chair to Wellington Ocean Sports. This is now part of our equipment, which will compliment what we offer and allow someone with a physical impairment to take part with their family, in a class or school group.
